The idea behind keyword placement is to maximize the SEO benefits of your post by strategically placing your keywords throughout your text. Let’s start from the beginning.
This is the first area where you want to begin thinking about keyword placement. While search engines no longer give any sense of ranking consideration to these two areas of your content, search engines do use them to help determine the nature of your content within a certain post. In this light, it is important that you place your targeted keywords within each of these areas in order to feed the search engines the the best possible description of your content. It is important that you make the meta description relevant and enticing, because it acts as a mini-ad for your blog. The better the mini-ad, the better the clickthrough.
Keyword placement in titles is arguably the most important SEO factor you have in your entire post. Obviously it takes more than a well optimized title to rank well in the search engines, but if you don’t get off to a good start, it is highly unlikely that you will finish well either.
As far as titles go, the closer that you can get your keywords to the beginning, the better. For example:

Your headers (if possible) should resemble the title of your post, but by all means it should not be identical. This tends to be the trickiest part of keyword placement. You must have a keyword rich body without it looking spammy to readers and spiders. Many people say that your keyword density (how many times your keyword(s) appear relative to the total amount of words in the post) should be anywhere from 2%-5% in order to effectively maximize your potential at gaining high search engine rankings.
The use of bold, italic and underlined text decorations are useful tools for highlighting the keywords that you have strung throughout your post. In theory, this would aid in rankings because it grabs readers’ attention better than regular text, but this is only a well speculated theory.
Personally, I believe that you should place your targeted keyword(s) in the first and last sentence of each of your posts. This gives the search engine spiders a very good idea of exactly what your content is about. Going along with this, the first 100 words of your posts and the last 50 words of your posts (my own speculations) are the most critical points for keyword placement. Make sure that you riddle your keywords within these areas in order to gain maximum search engine exposure.
On a final note, it is once again important to remember that you are writing for your readers, not the search engines. Keyword placement only works if it can satisfy both visitors and search engine spiders. If one or the other falters, your ability to rank well and grab lasting traffic decreases dramatically. Finding a good balance between authentic, unique content and highly optimized content is a well crafted art. It generally takes study and practice in order to learn how to make the two walk hand in hand with each other.
